 Turn on The 'Lights #8

Welcome to our eight edition of Turn on The 'Lights, Starlights GFC's information blog, keeping us in touch with our members and friends wherever we may find ourselves during these strange times.

At times it feels like there is very little happening or there's not much we can do in our lives at present, with various restrictions and limits curtailing us from doing what we love doing. None the less, there is light at the end of this particular tunnel and by sticking together we will get through this.
But then again, the human race is constantly evolving, as it has done, well...since the day dot.

Likewise, as a Club, Starlights GFC are looking for different ways we can stay in touch and hopefully make some kind of a difference to the lives of people every day. We realise that we are not just a football club; "we are a Community" and we need to be a community. Ideas like our blog or on-line Club Lottery have given us a chance to stay in touch with the community and also give our members and friends a chance to support the Club.
At a recent committee meeting we discussed other ideas which will afford us the opportunity to help broaden our standing in the community......so watch this space!! Social media platforms are playing a big part in our lives at present and this is something we can utilise for on-line Quiz's, on-line Bingo and such. When things start to get back to 'normal' and safe to do so, we may be in a position to organise excursions or  Car Bingo. Hopefully by then our onfield activities will have recommenced.
The future is not yet written!

We are Here! We are with you! Stay in touch!

Club Lottery Draw:

Here is a screen shot of this weeks Club Lottery Draw which took place on Facebook live last Sat.
Sean has put in a lot of work this week to streamline the draw presentation and we think you'll agree that his efforts have paid off. So much so, that Sean has declined approaches from RTE to present the national lottery programme and has committed his future to the Club for our on-line lottery.
Sean was also able to tell us that news of Starlights Club Lottery is spreading far and wide. He has even had reports of a former player (who resides in a neighbouring county and shall remain nameless) who was so intent on getting involved in the clubs lottery that he took out a €2 loan from his local Credit Union to finance his entry. Now there's dedication

All joking aside, we are extremely pleased with how the Club Lottery Draw has progressed so far. We are now into week seven of our online draws but we must issue a word of caution. You may be missing out! As each ticket/entry in the draw is entered for five weeks at a time, your ticket/entry may have or is about to expire. Check your results email (sent to the account holders email) which will detail how many entries are left for your selected numbers. See the sample below showing an expired entry. You can 'Auto Renew' your entry for five draws at a time and never again have to log in to your account to renew your entry. Your account will only be debited every five draws and also means you'll never miss a draw again.

G4MO - Couch to 5K:

The response to our G4MO Charity Couch to 5K has been brilliant with many signing up already and starting their training plans.
Everyone is welcome to take part and and we'll hopefully raise some much needed funds for the girls chosen charity, "Daughters of Charity Child & Family Service" who have a number of family service units in Santry.

The 5K run will take place Virtually on the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, anytime from Good Friday 2nd April to Easter Monday 5th April.

The route is any route over a distance of 5K. Just pick a 5K route wherever you are.

Our Club Coach Mark has developed a 5 week training plan for the girls to use and this plan can be used by 'athletes' of all standards; from complete beginner to regular 5K runners to help you train for the event. Mark has also provided us with some useful links for preparing for running and exercise in general.

So, Come on, let's join in with the G4MO and let's get Santry and Starlights running.

All they ask is that you donate to the Go Fund Me page (see link herewith) - we have set €10 as the entry fee for the run - but feel free to donate or sponsor whatever you can.

I Never Knew That:

As was mentioned earlier, during the current restrictions we have to come up with some new ways to go about our lives at present. Using social media is a very important way to keep in touch and one our G4MO members, Máire Byrne, hosted a Zoom quiz using Kahoot on Saturday for her team mates and their families and also invited the clubs committee to take part.

One of the questions that drew quite a lot of intrigue was "What it the national animal of Scotland"? A multiple choice question with the possible answer from, A Unicorn, A Horse, A Rabbit or the Loch Ness Monster.

The correct answer: A Unicorn. Well I never knew that!

As you can see from the picture Charlie Snr was very disappointed that nobody knew the answer to his question " when do the barbers open"?

Apparently Amy came up with a solution during the chats after the quiz.

Well done to the Byrne Clann for hosting a great Saturday nights  entertainment where the player known as Fuzzy Eagle swooped in to take the prey, eh, sorry, the prize. Next stop for Fuzzy Eagle has to be "The Chase"!

Why not host your own family quiz or bingo, or just even a family get-together using social media apps such as Whatsapp, Zoom, Teams etc and keep in touch with each other.

If you fancy, you can let us know how you get on and you might even feature here!!

If you wish to get in touch with the club on any matter you can email us on starlightsgfc@gmail.com or secretary.starlights.dublin@gaa.ie

A Blast from the Past:

This is a photo of a Starlights Under 16 team from not too long ago and quite a number of this team went on to win the last ever played for Dublin Junior League in 2001.

Can you name them?

Do you recognise any of them?
