Turn on the 'Lights #1
# Turn on the 'Lights
Welcome to our first edition of Turn on the 'Lights, a regular news feed to keep in touch with our members and friends wherever they may find themselves. We will feature regular updates about whats happening in the club and the progress we are making with various projects which are ongoing. We feel it is hugely important to keep in touch, particularly in this new and unusual 'normal' that we find ourselves living in. Hopefully we find you all well and keeping safe.
# What can we do?
During the restrictions endured with covid and lockdowns there is only so much that can be done and achieved. It can be quite hard on some people and some may suffer worse than others. Some may cope quite well, some may be suffering mentally, physically or just not finding the motivation to do anything. And, Arrgghh, Home-schooling!!
As a club we are becoming more aware of the importance of keeping in touch. Rather than sitting around and waiting for things to get back to normal, - what is normal anymore? - We have decided to adapt to this new normal. We all must carry on as best we can and at the same time help each other to adapt. So how do we do that?
The internet has and will continue to play a big part in our lives for the foreseeable future, watsapp, Zoom, facebook, twitter and other social media platforms can help us get over this and continue our lives as best we can. Oh, And, by the way, there is no such thing as "I'm too old to use or understand how that works". Remember, teenagers can be very useful when it comes to the internet. (I didn't say helpful, but, remember, we were all teenagers once!).
People older than me know how the 'old' money of 'Pounds, Shillings and Pence worked! Now that's impossible to understand.....(l s d) just saying!!
Club Lottery Draw:
The big new is!
The Club Lotto Draw returns on Sat 30th Jan.
This draw is the main fundraising for the day to day running of the club and also helps with funding projects such as the Hillfarm development.
Due to the Covid restrictions the Lotto Draw has to be done entirely online at present. Handling cash and physical tickets would pose an unsafe risk to members and club personnel - so we've had to adapt!
Playing the Club Lotto is a fun way to stay in touch with the club while also supporting us to generate much needed funds.
The draw will take place at around 2100 hrs (9pm) each Saturday and be broadcast on facebook live.
Tickets can be purchased at the following links:
Club web page http://starlightsgfc.ie/
or
Just click on either of the links and follow the instructions.
There is a minimum purchase for each ticket for 5 consecutive draws. You will also receive confirmation of your entry and will also receive a reminder text/email when your renewal is due, meaning you never have to miss a draw again and that chance to scoop the weekly jackpot.
Best of luck and thank you for your continued support!
Oh, BTW, did we mention the first Jackpot is €7,800. Nice!
Hillfarm:
Well, covid hasn't stopped the grass from growing as you can see from the above picture taken at Hillfarm in Turnapin.
Hillfarm will be the new juvenile training center and is ready to go as soon as we get the go ahead from the Government to commence underage activities again. Well, Almost!
We still need to erect the perimeter netting before activities commence. But as this is considered essential for safety we may be in a position for the contractor to carry out the works a bit sooner.
Couch to 5K:
Before the first lockdown the Couch to 5K group were making good strides (see what we did there) with numbers increasing weekly. Did you manage to keep going or did you give up? Anyway, we'll try keep you motivated.
So! we can't meet up as a group, but we could try something virtually. This is something we need to look at but in the meantime, if you have a running or activity app such as STRAVA or a Smartwatch (ie Fitbit or Garmin) you can record your activity and see how you progress. On some of these apps and devices you can challenge your family and friends to daily or weekly steps and distance challenges.
Keep an eye out for virtual 5ks that you may wish to enter and set your goal to complete it whether you run, walk or jog it. And remember, a sixty minute 5k is the same distance as a twenty minute 5k.
if you are stuck at home, Fingal County Council run a free (technology based!) home workout? If you want to keep fit without leaving the house, this could be the thing for you! Here's the link.
Starting Monday 18th January, these free classes will take place at 10 am and will last for approximately 30 to 40 minutes. The classes take place three times a week and cover Body Mind Movement, Full Body Exercises and Chair Exercises.
Stay Active, Stay Safe!
Football:
Well, there's none at the moment.
But what an end to 2020 it was with the Dubs capturing the Sam Maguire All Ireland trophy once again for 6 in a row. And the Dublin Ladies winning the Brendan Martin cup for the fourth successive year.
Bring on the Magnificent Seven and why not a Five in a row for the Ladies!
There is little or no activity on the club scene at present but we need to be ready to get back to action as soon as the situation allows.
We hope that the Little Stars, the Under 11s and the Gaelic for Mothers and others teams are continuing to stay active and practicing their skills. The club is privileged to have these groups representing us and congratulations to all the Coaches, parents and everyone involved, Hopefully we will see you all back in action soon.
We will be posting some skills videos over the next few weeks for you to practice & keep you going.
