Starlights Lottery Draw:
Starlights Weekly Lottery Draw returns on Saturday 30th Jan.
We are delighted to announce the return of the Lottery Draw, starting next sat.
This was always the clubs main income source and helps the club develop and also pays the costs of running the club. Despite the numerous lock-downs and no games, the club have still been active in developing the various projects which are ongoing during this time, such as Hillfarm and the maintenance of the main pitch in Collinstown Lane to name just two. By purchasing a ticket in our weekly draw you are helping to develop the club and helping us to provide some much needed resources to the benefit of everyone in the area, especially the younger generation.
Due to restrictions with Covid, the draw has to be done completely on-line, including ticket sales.
The closing date/time for entries is 6pm on the Sat of the draw. The draw will commence at 9pm live each Saturday on facebook!
Then simply follow the link, fill in the required details and select your 4 numbers to purchase your ticket.
There is a minimum purchase of 5 draws for each ticket, i.e. each ticket purchased is entered for 5 weeks/draws (€2 x 5 = €10). You can purchase as many tickets as you wish each week.
By registering your details with us on the Clubforce site you will be reminded each time when your ticket requires validating. You can also set up your account to automatically purchase your tickets for the next set of 5 draws for a whole year, meaning you never have to miss another draw, or search for another €2 coin. (or lick an envelope... yuk!).
The first Jackpot is a fantastic €7,800.
Everyone entered for next Saturdays Draw has the chance to win one of two Fitbit Watches, these watches are a great way to monitor your fitness and health!
.
Tickets are on sale now - Best of Luck!
New Recruits:
The club are always on the outlook for new recruits to play Gaelic football.
Obviously there's not much happening at the moment. But, if you have or know someone who may be interested in playing or training with the club we would love to hear from you.
We currently have our Nursery for boys and girls aged up to 7 years and our U11's will take to the field for the first time in 2021 as they move up from U9. This will leave us with an opportunity for the 8 & 9 year old age group to enter a team and we would welcome any new recruits to all of these groups.
Mark Hughes currently looks after the Nursery & U11's and he also looks after the games promotion for the club. Mark can be contacted on 089-4084553 if you need any further information.
We would also be interested in boys and girls aged 12 to 16 years who may be interested in joining the club to train and play Gaelic games.
Provisionally, March 6th has been set as a return date for juvenile activity, but this is totally dependent on the Government and HSE guidelines. So, we need to be ready to go when we get the go-ahead.
We'll keep you posted!
The 'Gaelic for Mothers and Others' would also like to hear from anyone interested in joining them for the coming season. You must be 21 and not currently playing club football in a league. The G4M & O is fun based activities, where you learn the skills of Gaelic football in a relaxed way and I believe the sessions oops, sorry!, I mean .....when they go and visit other clubs to play a game, they have an amazing time and make many new friends.
Sean Byrne had a Zoom training session with the G4M & O last week to prepare them for the upcoming season and he'd love to see a few new recruits joining.
Dublin V Mayo :
Over the more recent years there has been great rivalries between Dublin and Mayo in the All Ireland Championships for both the men and ladies from both counties. But did you know that there was quite a contingent from the Yew or Heather county who donned the Black & White of Starlights through the seventies, eighties and nineties and also into the new millennium? Some of them are still involved in club activities today.
Des Heneghan, Joe Munds, Kevin Quinn, John O'Hora, Eamon Walsh, Tom Macken, Ken Price and Patsy Mohan all hailed from Mayo and played for the Club during this era. Apologies if we've missed anyone from the list but if we have be sure to let us know!
Des Heneghan, even the ground moved out of the way when Big Dessie was on the charge. Sure the poor keeper never had a chance. Des was great man to get a goal late in the game.
Joe Munds, was a nippy and smart forward who always knew where the posts were and was full of tricks to get the better of his opponent.
Kevin Quinn, was a big ranging midfielder who could carry the game to the opposition. Kevin played for a few years before moving back to Mayo.
John O'Hora, John was a very capable goalkeeper who played for both the junior & Inter teams in the club and made many memorable saves. Sadly John is no longer with us, RIP
Eamon Walsh, or "The Red Lad" played anywhere from Center Back to Full Forward. Eamon was so strong, that no matter how the opposition tried to stop him, they'd just bounce off him and be left trailing behind.
Tom Macken, A Legend. Tom seems to have been around for ever. A gentleman off the pitch but would run through a brick wall to win the ball. Tom has probably played every position from Full Back to Full Forward and is still involved in the club today.
Ken Price, Big Ken is a gentle giant who had most success as a Midfielder. At about 6'6" Ken used this height to his advantage. A famous referee once remarked about Ken "I know that man and he wouldn't harm a fly" as his opponent lay prone on the ground, obviously feigning injury! Ken went on to manage the team through it's most successful period winning many trophies and cups and is still involved in the club today.
Patsy Mohan. Patsy played for Mayo at Minor and U21 level before coming to Starlights. He played in the 1974 All Ireland minor final which was the same day Kevin Heffernan guided The Dubs to their first senior title in eleven years. The experience Patsy brought to the club can still be seen today and he was also part of the management team who guided the club to the Dublin Junior Div 1 league, the last time it was ever played for.
The Mayo connection still continues today with Michael McHale & Paula Keating playing for the club and their children are also involved in both the Nursery and U11's.
Just thinking out loud here!!!!!!
If any of the retiring Mayo footballers would like to keep up the Mayo connection with us we'd be only delighted to have them.
Skills Challenge:
The Solo
Here's a skills challenge you can practice while waiting to get back on the pitch!
The solo is one of the main skills required when holding onto possession of the football. As the ball can not be held in your possession for longer than four steps, or, the time it takes to take four steps, the ball must be played by using the solo or bouncing the ball to the ground and catching it again. The ball can only be bounced once in succession, but the solo can be performed more than once consecutively.
It is a skill that requires a lot of hand, eye & foot co-ordination and becomes more difficult as you run, twist and evade your opponent. For this reason the Solo Run is practiced quite a lot during training sessions even at the elite level of games.
Here is a link to the GAA Solo Skill Card to help you practice and develop the solo. There are also drills designed to help you as you progress.
Solo Skill Card
Also, here is a video from the LGFA showing how to practice the Solo.
The Solo.
Please pay attention to the current regulations regarding Covid 19 when partaking in any activity.
You can practice this skill on your own, with a training partner (brother or sister) or involve the whole family (apologies to the parents/guardians). You are not limited to the training pitch to practice the Solo. Make use of your driveway, back yard or local park. Practically, wherever you have the space you can practice! Don't forget the ball!!
Couch to 5K: (and anyone else just looking to be active)
Well, how did you get on this last week? Did we motivate you to get out and walk or run?
Hopefully you are able to get out and do a little bit. Just like going to the shops.......Every little helps!
If you are getting out and about, why not let us know about it. Stick a photo of your activity on the facebook page attached to this, or simply just leave a comment telling how you are getting on. You can also email us at
starlightsgfc@gmail.com
Start off small, but aim for about 30 minutes activity in each session. As you progress you can increase the duration and intensity.
Set a goal. Depending on your level of fitness, this could be completing a certain mileage in a week, or completing a full 5K in a week/month. You decide!
Remember, the hardest part of any outdoor activity is Closing the front door behind you!
Stay active! Stay Healthy! Stay Safe!
That's it for this week. Enjoy the snow if you can!
