Turn on the 'Lights #3

Welcome to edition  #3 of Turn on the 'Lights, our regular news feed to keep us in touch with our members and friends wherever they may find themselves around the world.

A Brief History: Santry Starlights

Starlights GFC was founded in Santry Village in 1950 with P. Lawless, N. Farrell and L. Murphy recognized as the founding members.

At the time Santry was a tiny village on the outskirts of Dublin City where it bordered with the 'Country' part of Dublin, or Fingal. Coolock Lane and Santry Avenue still form that border to this day for electoral purposes.
Turnapin Lane was in the 'country' part of the devide and consisted of 36 houses nestled on the back road to Clonshaugh and Coolock.

In the 1950 era there was a large group of teenage boys from Santry, Turnapin and surrounding farmlands, probably hanging around with not much to do, but eager to play football. And thanks to Messrs. Lawless, Farrell & Murphy the first Starlights team was entered to play at minor (U18) level in The Fingal League. Their first home ground was in one of 'Murphys' fields which is now Furry Park Ind Est.

Starlights won their first trophy when they won the Thos. Ashe Cup in 1952.
Players on that team included: M Redmond, W Cooley, J Cooley, A Dunne, P Boland, S Mc Dermott, G Casey, J Dean, J Dunne, D, Kelly, J Finnegan, C Boland, N Mc Dermott, N Mc Cann, P Farrell, T Cooley & S Fowler.
There are some very familiar names on that team alright!

Skills Challenge:

The Crouch Lift or The Pick-up

As the ball cannot be touched or picked from the ground, the Crouch Lift or Pick-up is a technique used to lift the ball from the ground into your hands. This is another of the basic skills of gaelic football and therefore practiced quite often in training sessions. Remember, 'Practice makes Perfect'.
You can practice this skill on your own or with a training partner. Start with the ball stationary on the ground and then progress to a ball rolling on the ground.
Use the attached Skill Card to challenge yourself as you progress. Crouch Lift-skillcard

You can combine the Crouch lift with last weeks Skill Challenge The Solo.
(for games played under LGFA rules, the ball may be picked from the ground without having to lift with the foot).

Please pay attention to the current regulations regarding Covid 19 when partaking in any activity.

New Recruits:

The club are always on the outlook for new recruits to play Gaelic football.
Obviously there's not much happening at the moment. But, if you have or know someone who may be interested in playing or training with the club we would love to hear from you.

We currently have our Nursery for boys and girls aged up to 7 years and our U11's will take to the field for the first time in 2021 as they move up from U9.  This will leave us with an opportunity for the 8 & 9 year old age group to enter a team and we would welcome any new recruits to all of these groups.
Mark Hughes currently looks after the Nursery & U11's and he also looks after the games promotion for the club. Mark can be contacted on 089-4084553 if you need any further information.

We would also be interested in boys and girls aged 12 to 16 years who may be interested in joining the club to train and play Gaelic games.

Provisionally, March 6th has been set as a return date for juvenile activity, but this is totally dependent on the Government and HSE guidelines. So, we need to be ready to go when we get the go-ahead.
We'll keep you posted!

The 'Gaelic for Mothers and Others' would also like to hear from anyone interested in joining them for the coming season. You must be 21 and not currently playing club football in a league. The G4M & O is fun based activities, where you learn the skills of Gaelic football in a relaxed way.

The G4M&O had another Zoom training session with Sean Byrne during the week to help prepare them for the upcoming season and they'd love to see a few new recruits joining.

You can contact us at starlightsgfc@gmail.com if you need any further information on any of the above.

Club Lottery Draw:

Many thanks to all who took part in this weeks Club Lottery Draw. This was a huge task for the club to undertake in the current circumstances and we were worried that it may not come to fruition. But, full credit to the Executive Committee, and you, the members of the club ,who rowed in behind the idea of going fully on-line with the draw.

Once again, Thank you for your continued support.
