Turn on The 'Lights #4
With no action on the GAA fields, either at Club or County level in the immediate future, it remains for the TV to provide us with our sporting fix.
For live action, this week end is a busy one for the lads with the funny shaped balls. The Six Nations Rugby gets under way and also the American Football "Superbowl" final is on Sun night. The Superbowl sees The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have home-field advantage over the Kansas City Chiefs. That would never happen in the All Ireland series, would it??
You can still get your GAA fix on TG4 where you can relive the excitement of the games and crowd as they regularly show re-runs of great GAA games of the past.
In the meantime, we'll do our best to stay in touch with you and keep you motivated until we can get back to action ourselves!
Starlights and Santry through the years:
This week we feature the Starlights GFC team from the 1960's. The above photo features quite a number of the original Starlights team that we featured last week from 1952. It's not uncommon for Starlights teams to have the same line up through the years as there is a strong community and family bond within the club.
The above team photo includes: A Dunne, C Mc Gauley, G Casey, S Murphy, N Mc Cann, C Hanley, G Cooley, K Wade, J Moran, R Caul, S Mc Dermott, D Byrne, T Dunne, M Caul, T Cronin & S Cronin.
Sadly, quite recently we have lost two members of the 60's team, Christy Hanley & George Casey, and unfortunately we have not been able to pay our respects and celebrate the lives of both men as we would hope to due to Covid restrictions.
Both men were staunch club members and supporters. Christy ticked all the boxes as a footballer, committee member and team manager/selector. He was also a huge fundraiser for the club and this culminated in him becoming Lord Mayor of Starlights/Santry.
George was a big supporter of the club and was still in attendance at club games up to quite recently.
When the club entered a second adult team in the Fingal League in the early eighties, George was to the fore as a selector/manager and often had a full carload of players in tow as many of the team were still too young to drive.
Skills Challenge:
The High Catch
The High catch is one of the most spectacular sights on the GAA field. The above picture is of Dublin full back Sean Doherty outjumping everyone to catch a late Kerry free in during the All Ireland semi final of 1977. From this possession Dublin went up the pitch to score the match winning goal.
You can practice the high catch on your own simply by throwing the ball up high over your head and jumping as high as you can to the catch ball.
You can combine all the skills we've previously featured to keep you going until we bet back on the training field. Remember, you need a lot of luck to win games and "the more you practice, the luckier you get!"
G4MO:
The Gaelic for Mothers and Others team had a double Zoom training session this week where Sean Byrne put them through their paces with a kettle bell session.
Rumour has it that one of these sessions took place at 8am on Sat. Now, I most definitely knew there was an 8am for coming in on a Sat morning after the night before, but I did not know there was an 8am for getting up for a kettle bell session. Fair play girls, this will stand to you when you get back out on the pitch.
If you would like to get involved with the G4MO you can drop us a line on facebook or email us on
