Turn on the 'Lights #5

 Turn on the 'Lights #5

Well, that wasn't the news we were hoping for from the GAA's Covid Advisory Group earlier this week. But it probably wasn't really that unexpected, was it? So, it's highly unlikely we will see any onfield action before Easter. The important thing however, is that everyone stays safe and looks after themselves. We will get out of this, but all in good time.

In the meanwhile, stay in touch with one another, keep your spirits up, check in on neighbours, friends and family, especially the elderly and vulnerable in our community. Just calling in to check on someone may be the only interaction they get. But remember to keep yourself and them safe.
If your out on a walk or run, say "hello" to others who are out and about. It could be the "hello" or "Good Morning" that makes all the difference.
We are in this together and, together we will get through it!

Skills Challenge:

The Low Catch

This weeks' skill is the Low Catch. The player who gets out in front of his/her marker will always be favourite to gain possession when the ball is played in to them low.
Use the Skill Card here: Low Catch Skill Card to help your development with this skill.

Like all the other skills challenges we have posted you can practice the Low Catch on your own or with a training partner. On your own, simply roll or bounce the ball against a wall or kerb and catch it as it rebounds to you. Start from a stationary position and as you progress practice by moving forward to catch the ball as it rebounds back to you. To increase the difficulty try bouncing the ball off the wall as you move to the left/right or have your training partner throw the ball to your left or right for you to catch.

Those of you who have the misfortune to be off school at the moment , ehem, ehem,  could try combine all the skills we have featured over the last five weeks in to a mini training session.

Adults can practice these skills too - see how you get on!

Couch to 5K:

The club ran a very successful Couch to 5K last year prior to the pandemic halting everyone's efforts. Pictured above are many of the participants from last year.
We hope to be able to run further programs like this when the situation allows.

Are you still getting out for a run, walk or jog? You are! Brilliant, keep it up!
No? For whatever reason that be, the lockdowns?, home schooling?, or just motivation? Not to worry, you can still pick it up or start again.

Completing a 5K (walk, jog or run) is great for the mind as well as the body. It's a great way to maintain a level of fitness for footballers too when there are no games.

Set yourself a goal of completing a 5K in say,, one months time!
Start off slow and easy. Two to three short walks/runs a week will help you build up your stamina and fitness. Increase the distance of the walk/run as you progress but remember to have rest days. Alternating your runs with a cycle also helps.
Don't mind the weather. There's no such thing as bad weather when it comes to exercise, just the wrong clothing! Although, be careful in extreme conditions!!

Let us know how you get on, you can get in touch by posting on our facebook page or messenger. Or you can email us on starlightsgfc@gmail.com

Happy Valentines:

As it's Valentines week end, we hope that all you wished for has come through and there were plenty of Cards, Chocolates and flowers, or perhaps even a Ring! We're feeling the Love.

God loves a trier, but this one individual we heard about needs to try harder.

He asked his girlfriend if she'd like anything particular for Velentines Day? She replied, "Something black and lacy would be nice".
So he bought her a pair of Football Boots!
(Obviously thought she wanted to join the GAA for Ma's team).

Anyway, to make amends, he booked a 'table for two' in town for 8pm.
So they get all dolled up, order the Taxi and head for town................
But,
.
.
.
Turns out, She doesn't like Snooker! 💕 😲

Happy Valentines!

Have a great week!
